All the world’s a stage, And all the men and women merely players; They have their exits and their entrances; (from As You Like It, by William Shakespeare)

Nagita masterfully sets the stage for Candy’s story. Her own experience as a theatre actress when she was young, made her appreciate and love theatre plays very much. In her own words, from her famous essay “My time with Candy”: “I would sometimes catch myself muttering Ophelia’s lines from ‘Hamlet’… I realized that, before I knew it, I had discovered the joy of reading plays. When writing the novel for Candy, there were times when I imagined the story and scenes on the stage.”

And so, our Candy tells us about Slim’s painting. How her beloved has placed it strategically in the room so the painting can be seen from every point Candy is standing. We move inside Candy’s house as if we are walking on a theatre stage where Slim’s painting becomes the focal point from where Candy’s story will begin.

The little story added by Candy (Ms. Nagita) about how this painting reached Candy, of her beloved having found it at an open market gives an extra nod to the theatre world. It is well known that the theatre people frequent open markets and vintage shops in search of props for the plays they produce. And so, Terry too would have been someone who frequented such places in between rehearsals where during his break would wander around looking for interesting objects he could use as props on the stage.

In an almost magical way Ms. Nagita describes Candy’s house being surrounded by daffodils in bloom, with their perfume having entered the house through the open windows and goes into our souls. And so the story begins… Painting is by Anjana Cawdell, titled “Watercolour”

Summer #loving happened so fast… The love story that blossoms between Candy and Terry at the Scottish summer, was the stuff dreams are made on. For us #CandyCandyfans who were in love with #TerenceGranchester, those episodes were the most memorable and the most loved episodes to watch.
From the descriptions in the #Candycandyfinalstorynovel, the most likely candidate for the setting of the Scottish summer, where Candy’s summer school as well as Terry’s summer holiday villa were situated is the Duddingston Loch, at the Duddingston village which is found at the outskirts of Edinburgh next to Arthur’s Seat. This is where the oldest pub of Edinburgh exists till today, named “Sheep’s Heid”. Its symbol is a sheep’s head, looking exactly like the sheeps Mark was herding in the anime.

“I gently trace that signature with my finger. These big round letters are definitely those of Ms. Pony, embodying how warm she was as a person. There is no force to her writing like it usually does but, I feel like I can hear her voice, Ms. Pony who smells like warm pancakes.

“Ms. Paulina . . . ”

When I gently say that name out loud, it just makes me smile. I only found out that Ms. Pony had a real name when I had become an adult.

“I was called Pony since I was a young girl. I looked so similar to the chubby pony that grew up on the farm next door. I guess my figure hasn’t changed since then.”

Ms. Pony told me as she laughed. When we would start talking about names, Ms. Lane would always make this charming confession.

“I would be made fun of as a child so often with a name like Lane Roche . . . I started to feel like I was a Roach or a Loach . . . I hated that so much that I would mispronounce it on purpose. It’s a valuable last name given to me from past generations, what an ungrateful thing I was doing —.”

I can just picture Ms. Lane gazing up at the sky and looking shameful about her actions with a stern face. The warm fireplace at “Pony’s house.” The sound of the firewood crackling. Ms. Pony relaxingly sitting in an old chair. Ms. Lane handing me a hot cocoa as I sat in front of the fireplace.”

At the opening scene of the Candy Candy Final Story, we learn from Candy how she found out of Ms Pony’s real name when she was an adult. Candy says: “When we start talking about names…”

"What is in a name", Juliet asks herself in Romeo and Juliet. Candy and Terry were born within the pages of a #shojo manga. The plot of the story may have been inspired by similar stories of the Western literature where the young girl grows into a strong young woman who faces adversities with courage, but within the manga there are important moments which are relevant to Japanese girls and the society as a whole. The intimacy of calling someone with their first names is such a moment where the relationship a couple has, enters the next level. For Candy and Terry, the circle in their relationship opens when she calls him with his first name on that famous scene where she falls on Terry who is surrounded by budding #daffodils and closes in Candy's present where her mature garden is full of blooming daffodils, their scent is permeating the house where she is living with her beloved.
Interestingly, in the manga the same circle for Candy and Terry opens again in St. Paul when Candy is walking in the forest with the "love sonnets" by Louise Labe held close to her chest, a homework put by Sister Kreis (meaning circle in German) and closed with Karen Kreis (same surname) when she visits Terry after his break up with Candy.
Ms. Nagita being primarily a poet is using symbolism through images and words to convey situations and feelings inside a story. She has removed Karen Kreis in the final novel and thus closes the circle between Candy and Terry in Candy's present with Terry living with her as husband and wife. For most fans of shojo manga, it becomes obvious that there is a golden rule: the guy the main female character has her first kiss with, is the person she will end up with. Whether the girl’s first kiss is accidental, forced, or (in extremely rare circumstances) consensual, eventually the heroine will start to warm up to the person who stole her lips, oftentimes because of the kiss. The fact that the main female character must always end up with the guy who stole her lips’ virginity is interesting because it shows how big of a deal first kisses are for teenage girls – not just in shojo manga, but in real-life Japanese society. There is a slight truth in this. Nagita created Terry due to the success the first manga volume had. He had not been planned for the beginning. But as Nagita said when interviewed: “This is the magic for writing for a live manga. The importance of characters change and a secondary character may take centre stage.” The success of Terry with the fans has been so great, he is the most popular character in the story, behind Candy herself. The word plot here shows the mention-analysis done by Lady Gato and Holly.

In 2014, Lady Gato counted the number of times Candy, Terry, Albert and Anthony were mentioned in CCFS. It is worth to note the lengths of dislike, belittlement and even naked hate, the love story between Candy and Terry gathers in Candy Candy. Candy and Terry are two young souls who meet each other at a pivotal time in their lives. Candy is grieving for the loss of Anthony and Terry carries the wounds of being the unloved child between a Duke and an American actress. Both help each other in a profound way to find their future destinies in life and the love that blooms between them brought millions of young girls to levels of happiness and sadness, no other comic had succeeded to do so. Candy Candy the manga, was the fist shojo manga in history to sell multimillion copies and it owes this historical success in that love story. A lot of older fans of Albert later on, seek to cancel that love story. They stop it at the time of their first break up at the college of St. Paul. They describe is as superficial or even as non-existent. They label Terry as a violent, misogynist abuser, taking out of context his actions as a teenage boy, while having no knowledge of the tropes of the shojo manga genre. Lastly, they belittle their tragic break up and the meeting in Rockstown. They glorify Susanna, the "other" young woman who keeps Terry to her side, while creating an imaginary love story between them, just because they cannot stand the love Terry and Candy share. In the novel, the one letter Terry sends to Candy is moved everywhere, trying in every way possible to prove they never meet again. Why all that hate? Such an insistence to cancel a fictional love story, only indicates personal trauma of previous relationships, especially at a young age. Perhaps, Candy's story is not the best book for those readers. But please if you do have bad experiences of young love relationships, do not take your frustrations on an imaginary couple.
