Myth # 10: Nagita said Albert is the Predestined Love

Nagita Did Not Say "Predestined Love"!!!

For decades now, Alfans have been passing around this lie that Nagita once said in an interview that she planned three loves for Candy, and that Albert was the “predestined” love. Now, at last, we’re here to proof they had been lying all along. Thanks to LadyGato, who provided us a copy of the interview, we are now able to tell you exactly what Nagita said.

The interview is from the Candy Candy Encyclopedia, published by Toei. The translation is made by Ms. Hanabi Ito, a professional translator who is a native Japanese speaker with no prior knowledge of Candy Candy. Ms. Hanabi is also the translator of the unofficial English translation of CCFS we published on this site.

Thank you to Candy Candy Superfan Lady Gato for sharing this article.

Nagita: (answer follows in mid-sentence from previous page) That just was a perfect match to editors’ intention, so I didn’t write it like a very typical comic book. Typically, the story of an orphan is of them looking for their mother, so I made the decision of disregarding this tendency and gave her the story of a girl who had a positive attitude towards her life, and gave her three different types of loves —the first was her short-lived first love with Anthony, a boy that is so transparent; a love filled just with kindness. Next was the intense love with Terry at the bloom of their youth; the kind of love that end even though there are still feelings involved. And finally, the amicable and gentle love towards Mr. Albert.

[*Note: We asked the translator, Ms. Hanabi Ito, if Nagita in fact said “amicable” and gentle love, and not “predestined” and gentle love. We further asked her if the word “predestined” appeared in Nagita’s answers here at all.

Ms. Hanabi answered: Nothing about “predestined”.

What Nagita said was “amicable and gentle love. Regarding “predestined”–as always, Alfans were making up crap.]

Question: What was the most challenging part about writing Candy?

Nagita: I was able to write it very naturally and had fun doing so. However, it was hard for me to write those parts where the characters were being mischievous.

Question: Who’s your favorite character?

Nagita: Stair and Mr. Albert.

Question: What message did you want to send to your readers through Candy?

Nagita: To have a positive attitude on life, that it’s okay to go from feeling sad to feeling happy again.

Question: Are there any anecdotes between you and your readers?

Nagita: There was a person who changed their mind about committing suicide after reading Candy.

Question: What are your thoughts on this work, from your perspective?

Nagita: I really can’t wrap my mind around the fact that this is my work.
